Five Split kayak tours compared on price, transfer, group size and where they actually paddle, including the transparent glow tour at night and the one trip that runs under the Marjan cliffs.

What You Should Know

  • Five trips, three completely different places: the Žrnovnica river mouth at Stobreč, the Marjan cliffs off Bene beach, and the Cetina river 25 km east at Omiš.
  • Three tours include a return van transfer from central Split. The Marjan sea kayak and the Cetina rental do not, so you reach Bene beach or Omiš under your own steam.
  • €24 to €50 per person. The cheapest is a self-guided rental with no guide and no transfer; the dearest includes snorkel gear, photos and a glass of Croatian wine at the end.
  • Advertised duration includes the van and the briefing. A 2.5 hour evening tour is about 90 minutes of actual paddling, which is the most common source of disappointment.

Kayak Tours in Split

A kayak tour in Split is not one thing. The trips sold under that name paddle three separate stretches of water: the sheltered Žrnovnica river mouth at Stobreč, about 5 km east of the centre, the open sea beneath the Marjan cliffs off Bene beach, and the Cetina river at Omiš, a 25 km drive down the coast. All three are good. They are not interchangeable, and the listings rarely make the difference obvious.

That single fact does most of the work in choosing. If you want the postcard, cliffs, pine forest and clear water, that is the Marjan trip and you will need to get yourself to Bene beach. If you want the easiest logistics, the Stobreč tours collect you outside a city-centre hotel and drive you there and back. If you want to be on the water longest for the least money, the Cetina rental gives you four hours and no guide. Prices run €24 to €50 per person, and most of that spread is about which of the three you are buying rather than how good it is. Kayaking also pairs naturally with the other Cetina activities out of Split, so it is worth reading alongside our guides to rafting on the Cetina, the Blue Cave boat trips, and the tuk tuk tours that cover the same Marjan coastline from the road. For the same water after dark, there is the Split boat party.

Our Top Pick

Adriatic Adventure: Illuminated Evening Guided Kayaking Tour

From €48 · 4.8 ⭐ (2,223 reviews)

By far the most-reviewed kayak trip in Split, at 2,223 against 193 for the next closest, and the only one doing something you cannot do anywhere else on this coast. Transparent kayaks lit from beneath, a river passage and a night swim, with the return van transfer from central Split included and the smallest group cap here at 15.

Our Take

Ignore the price column on the first pass and look at the last two instead. Three of these tours put you in a van outside a city-centre hotel and hand you back there two and a half hours later; two expect you to reach a beach in a forest park or a town 25 km down the coast. That single difference decides more bookings here than the €26 between cheapest and dearest, and it is the thing the listings bury.

Fell in, and a guide stayed with us the whole way

My friend and I had the most amazing time during this experience, to start our first guide, Ivan greeted us when we arrived at the beach. He was so nice and welcoming. I feel bad because I don't remember the other guides' names, but every single one of them was super nice and super accommodating to me and my friend! At one point we fell off the kayak into the river,😂 which honestly made the experience a core memory but it wasn't due to difficulty at all. It was due to user error lol 😭Still, the guys were super helpful, and we all just laughed about it, not once did I feel unsafe, as even when my friend and I fell behind the group, one of the guides stayed next to us and directed us. This is a perfect experience, even if you've never been kayaking before definitely a good arm workout, but the river is gorgeous. We even got to see some fish! I would give it a 10 out of 10, and I would 100% do it again!!!

Sunset first, then the colours after dark

Honestly, it was a wonderful activity to do at sunset, and then at night, it's really very pleasant and beautiful with all these colors and this scenery. In addition, the live guides are very friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend it.

What to Expect on a Split Kayak Tour

The shape of an evening departure, using our top pick as the reference:

  1. 01Arrive 15 min early

    Meet Near Bačvice

Prilaz Braće Kaliterna 1, opposite Hotel Briig, a short walk from the Old Town. Look for the van covered in kayak and paddleboard stickers.

  2. 02~20 min

    Van to Stobreč

East out of the city to the campsite beach at Stobreč, away from the lights of the centre. The return leg is included in the price.

  3. 03~15 min

    Briefing and Kit

A certified guide covers safety, paddle technique and what to do if you go in. Transparent double kayaks, paddles and optional life vests are handed out on the beach.

  4. 04Dusk

    Out to the Žrnovnica

Paddle out of the bay and up into the river mouth as the sun drops. Around 4 km total across the whole route, at a pace set for beginners.

  5. 05After dark

    The Lights Come On

Once you are clear of the village lights the LEDs under the hull light the water, and the riverbed and seabed become visible beneath you. There is a swim stop at a quiet pebble beach.

  6. 06~2.5 hrs total

Back to the Beach and the Van

Paddle back to Stobreč, change, and take the van to the same meeting point in Split. Photos from the trip are shared with you afterwards.

Guided trips run 2.5 to 3.5 hours door to door, of which 1.5 to 3 hours are actually on the water. Nobody expects you to have kayaked before: the four guided options all start with a safety briefing and basic instruction, the kayaks are stable open designs rather than enclosed sea kayaks, and life vests are provided. Most guests find that the group moves at the pace of its slowest boat, with a guide dropping back to stay alongside anyone who falls behind. This is where tours really differ: the Stobreč trips are consistently described as calm and social, while the Marjan sea route is a genuine workout that leaves people pleasantly wrecked. The timings below follow our top pick, the illuminated evening tour.

Our take (paddling time is not tour length): The gap between the two is bigger here than on most activities, and it is the single most common source of disappointment we see. A 2.5 hour glow tour is roughly 40 minutes of van and briefing and about 1.5 hours of paddling. Guests who timed it report being on the water from around 20:30 to 22:00, and one who booked a 2 hour 45 minute slot was back an hour and a quarter earlier than the listing implied. The 4 hour Cetina rental, by contrast, really is 4 hours of kayak, because there is no transfer and no guide talking. If time on the water is what you are buying, read that column rather than the headline duration.

Going in the water is worth expecting rather than fearing. The guided trips use open sit-on-top kayaks rather than enclosed sea kayaks, so coming off means sliding into warm water rather than being trapped underneath, and guests who capsized tend to describe it as the part they remember rather than a scare. Being comfortable in water matters considerably more here than being fit.

Our take (the photos are a real inclusion): Four of the five include tour photos, and on the guided trips guides shoot them on GoPros as you paddle, then send them afterwards, often as a QR code link. This matters more than it sounds: you cannot safely carry a phone on a sit-on-top kayak, so without the operator's photos you come back from a scenic three hours with nothing. Guests mention them more consistently than almost anything else, and they are free. Check that the trip you pick includes them; the Cetina rental does not.

On the transparent kayaks, the clear hull turns out to matter more than the lights. The detail guests return to most often is the wildlife visible underneath: eels and crabs on the riverbed, shoals of fish, duck families in the reeds, and on one sea departure a pod of dolphins, with guides lifting things out to show people. Anyone booking the glow tour for the LEDs alone should know that several reviewers found them subtler than the marketing photographs suggest. What consistently lands is being able to see down.

Best Kayak Tours in Split

All five put you in a stable, beginner-friendly kayak with a life vest and no requirement to have paddled before. What separates them is where they launch, whether anyone is paddling alongside you, and how you get to the water. We'd sort them by launch point first: the choice between a sheltered river mouth and open sea under the cliffs changes the day far more than the €26 between cheapest and dearest.

1
Best Overall

Adriatic Adventure: Illuminated Evening Guided Kayaking Tour

The volume leader by an enormous margin, 2,223 reviews against 193 for the next closest, and the only trip here that does something genuinely unusual. Transparent kayaks lit from beneath turn the riverbed visible, you paddle the Žrnovnica out to the sea as the light goes, and there is a swim stop at a quiet pebble beach. Return van transfer from central Split is included and the group is capped at 15. Photos come free afterwards, which reviewers mention more than anything else. We think the tradeoff is honest: you are paying a premium for novelty rather than for time on the water, and the minority who rate it two stars are almost always people who wanted a longer paddle.

Split: Guided Sea Kayaking Tour with Snorkeling

The only trip on this page that paddles the coastline people picture when they search for kayaking in Split: the Marjan cliffs, Kašjuni beach, and the water below Tito's villa. Three hours on open sea, snorkel gear and cliff jumping included, and a glass of Croatian wine at the end. The catch is logistics: there is no transfer, so you need a taxi out to Bene beach in Marjan Forest Park and a plan for getting back.

Best for Sunset

Adriatic Adventure: Sunset Guided Kayaking Tour

The same Stobreč water as our top pick and the same included transfer, timed so you are on the river and the sea as the light drops behind Marjan. Rated 4.9, snorkel gear and GoPro photos included, cliff jumping at the white rocks if you want it. Groups run to 20, larger than the glow tour, and it is the pick if you want the good light without paddling in the dark.

Best Daytime Trip

Adriatic Adventure: Guided Kayak Adventure Tour

Three hours, the longest of the guided Stobreč trips, and the one with proper daylight for the swimming, snorkelling and cliff jumping stops. Views inland to the Mosor ridge that the evening tours never see. Single, double and triple kayaks are available, which makes it easier for a family of three than the strict doubles on the glow tour. The smallest review base of the Adriatic Adventure trips at 163. We'd make sure to take a double rather than a single if there is any wind, which is the one piece of hindsight paddlers on this trip offer most often.

Best Value

Omiš Tours: Kayak Rental, Cetina Protected Nature Park Area

Half the price of anything else here and nearly twice the time on the water, because nobody is guiding you. Four hours to paddle 7 km up the Cetina to Radmanove Mlinice and back, stopping to swim wherever you like. You get a safety briefing, a life jacket and a waterproof barrel, then you are on your own. It is in Omiš, 25 km from Split, with no transfer as standard but free parking on site. We wouldn't choose this for a solo traveller: if yours is the only booking that slot, you are alone on 14 km of river, and at least one guest turned back within minutes because of it.

Three of these launch from the same beach at Stobreč with transfer included. If your priority is the Marjan cliffs or the Cetina canyon, budget for a taxi or a car on top of the ticket price.

Where Split Kayak Tours Actually Go

Looking at how these tours are structured, this is the part worth reading before you compare prices, because the three launch points produce three quite different days on the water.

Stobreč and the Žrnovnica river

Stobreč is a village on a small peninsula about 5 km east of central Split, and its campsite beach is where three of these five tours launch. You paddle out of a sheltered bay, up into the mouth of the Žrnovnica river, then back onto the Adriatic toward the white cliffs where local houses sit above the water. It is calm, beginner-friendly and genuinely pretty, with the Mosor ridge inland, but it is not the dramatic limestone coastline the word "Split" suggests. The compensation is logistics: all three include a return van transfer from a meeting point near Bačvice, so you never think about how to get there.

Marjan and Bene beach

Bene sits at the far western tip of Marjan Forest Park, and the sea kayak tour that launches there is the one that matches the postcard. You paddle beneath the Marjan cliffs past Kašjuni beach and Tito's villa on open water, with snorkelling and cliff jumping stops and a glass of wine at the end. It is the longest paddle here at around three hours. It is also the one with no transfer: Bene is a genuine trek from the Old Town, and the practical route is a taxi to Prva Voda beach and a ten minute walk.

The Cetina at Omiš

Omiš is 25 km down the coast, at the mouth of the Cetina canyon, and the kayaking there is river paddling rather than sea kayaking. The rental sends you 7 km upriver toward Radmanove Mlinice and back, through the same protected canyon the Cetina rafting trips run further upstream. The first stretch has a light current, then it flattens out like a lake. Nobody paddles with you, which is the point: four hours, your own pace, and the lowest price on this page. There is a neat natural turnaround signal, too: as you approach the stretch where the rafting trips run, the current strengthens enough to start pushing you back, which is how most people know they have gone far enough.

Our Take

Work out how you are reaching the water before you compare tickets. The €50 Marjan trip and the €42 sunset trip look close on price and are not: one hands you a van from a city-centre meeting point and the other expects a taxi into a forest park and another one back. Add that in and the gap roughly doubles. It is the same trap as the €24 rental, which is genuinely the cheapest way to kayak near Split only if you already have a car.

How Much Does a Kayak Tour in Split Cost?

Split kayak tours run €24 to €50 per person. The biggest difference is not quality but what is bundled: a guide or not, a transfer or not, and gear like snorkel sets and photos on top. Here is what each band actually buys.

Budget€24

Self-Guided Rental

The Cetina rental, and the only unguided option here. Four hours of kayak, a life jacket, a waterproof barrel and a safety briefing, plus free parking, restrooms and a lounge at the agency. No guide, no transfer, no snorkel gear and no photos. Excellent value if you have a car and want time on the water rather than commentary.

Mid€40–42

Guided With Transfer

The two daytime and sunset Stobreč trips. Both include the return van from central Split, a licensed guide, snorkel gear, a dry bag and GoPro photos, with swimming and cliff jumping stops. This is the band most people should be in: nothing meaningful is missing and the logistics are handled.

Premium€48–50

The Two Distinctive Trips

The glow tour at €48 and the Marjan sea kayak at €50 are not upgraded versions of the mid-range trips, they are different days out. One is transparent kayaks and LEDs after dark with transfer included; the other is three hours on open sea under the cliffs with wine at the end and no transfer at all. Worth knowing that the glow tour draws the only recurring price complaint on this page: a small but steady minority think €48 is a lot for about 90 minutes of paddling.

Extras€10–30

What You Still Pay For

Getting to Bene beach or Omiš is the real add-on. A taxi out to Marjan Forest Park and back is the difference between the €50 Marjan trip and the €42 one that collects you. Nothing here includes food, and only the Marjan tour includes a drink. Parking at the Cetina rental is free.

Best value overall: €40 to €42 for a guided Stobreč trip with the transfer, gear and photos included. Only go cheaper if you have your own transport, and only go dearer if you specifically want the glow kayaks or the Marjan cliffs.

When to Go Kayaking in Split

Kayaking here is a warm-season activity, and the time of day matters as much as the month.

Coolest paddlingMorning

Early Departures

The water is flattest early and the sun has not built yet. Best for the longer three hour trips, where you are exposed on open water without shade for most of the time.

Best lightSunset

Late Afternoon

The sun drops behind Marjan and the cliffs at Stobreč take the last of it. The sunset tour is timed for this, and the glow tour starts in it before the lights come on. The most photogenic window by a distance.

Something differentAfter dark

Night

Only the illuminated tour runs properly after dark. Transparent hulls lit from beneath make the water legible in a way daylight does not, and the swim stop happens under the stars. It is the busiest booking in Split kayaking for a reason.

All five run in the warm months, and on any of them you should expect to get at least splashed, so check the forecast for wind rather than just temperature. Choppy water turns a beginner paddle into hard work, and wind matters more than temperature here: the sheltered Stobreč route handles a breezy day far better than the open water under Marjan.

Who These Tours Suit, and Who Should Skip Them

Kayaking is one of the easier adventure activities to recommend around Split, mostly because none of these trips demands any skill. There are still real mismatches worth naming.

You do not need experience or much fitness

Every guided option starts with a briefing and a paddling lesson, and the kayaks are stable sit-on-top designs rather than enclosed sea kayaks. Guests routinely describe arriving having never kayaked and finishing comfortably. It is a genuine arm workout over three hours, but the guided groups move at the pace of the slowest boat and guides drop back to stay with anyone struggling.

You do need to be comfortable in water

This is the requirement that actually matters. Going into the water is a normal part of these trips, whether deliberately at a swim stop or accidentally off the side. The four guided trips all list a swimming, snorkelling or cliff jumping stop, and on the Cetina rental you are free to swim wherever you like, though nothing is scheduled and no snorkel gear is provided. Life vests are provided throughout, but if anyone in your group is uneasy out of their depth, this is the wrong booking.

Check the age before anything else if you have children

The three Adriatic Adventure trips recommend a minimum of 12, the Marjan sea kayak is not suitable under 8, and the Cetina rental has no hard minimum as long as a child is with an adult. That is a wide spread, and for a family it eliminates most of the page in one step.

Do not book the rental alone

The Cetina rental is unguided in the fullest sense. If yours is the only booking in that slot, you will be on a 14 km stretch of river by yourself, and at least one solo guest found that uncomfortable enough to turn back after five minutes. It is designed for pairs and groups, and the kayaks and pricing assume you have someone with you.

Expect a route briefing, not a lesson, on the Cetina

This is the clearest expectation gap on the page. Guests report being told the route and sent off, without paddle technique or safety instruction, which is a reasonable thing for a rental to do and a surprise if you booked it expecting the hand-holding the guided trips provide. Reports also split on difficulty: a family with teenagers found it effortless, while a solo paddler who went the full distance described three and a half hours of real upper-body work. Both are true, and the difference is how far up the river you choose to go.

Skip the rental if you do not have a car

The Cetina rental is the best value here on paper and the worst if you are relying on public transport. It launches in Omiš, 25 km from Split, with no transfer included as standard, though the operator will quote for a pickup if you ask. Parking on site is free, which tells you who it is designed for.

Not suitable with back problems or over 110 kg on the Cetina

The rental operator publishes specific limits: no participants over 110 kg, over 75, with back problems, or with babies under one. The guided sea trips do not publish equivalent restrictions, but three hours seated in a kayak is three hours seated in a kayak, and anyone with a bad back should think about that regardless of what the listing allows.

The pattern across all five is that the paddling is the easy part and the logistics are where people get caught out. Almost nobody comes back saying the kayaking was too hard. They come back having discovered that Bene beach is a long way from the Old Town, that a 2.5 hour tour is 90 minutes of actual water, or that the €24 rental was 25 km down the coast. Sort those out in advance and any of these is a good day.

Our Take

What stands out in guest reviews is that solo travellers do well on these trips. The kayaks are mostly doubles, so booking alone means being paired with another paddler or a guide, and the people this happened to describe it as a highlight rather than an awkwardness.

Tips for Your Split Kayak Tour

  • Check where the tour launches before you check the price. Three leave from Stobreč with a van included, one from Bene beach in Marjan Forest Park with no transport, and one from Omiš 25 km away. This decides more about your day than the €26 spread between cheapest and dearest.
  • Leave your phone in the van or the barrel. Sit-on-top kayaks take water constantly and there is nowhere dry. Four of the five tours include photos shot by the guides, which is the practical answer; on the Cetina rental you get a waterproof barrel instead, so bring a dry bag if you want pictures.
  • Book the evening or sunset slot in high summer. There is no shade on the water and no cover on a sit-on-top. The late departures are cooler, the light is better, and the sea is usually calmer than midday.
  • Wear something you can swim in and bring a change. Every one of these trips involves getting wet, whether at a snorkel stop, a cliff jump or a night swim. A towel and dry clothes for the ride back matter more than any gear.
  • Solo travellers should expect to share a kayak. The glow tour uses transparent doubles, so booking alone means being paired with another paddler. The daytime adventure tour has singles, doubles and triples, which is the better pick if you want your own boat or you are three.
  • Plan the taxi home from Bene in advance. Marjan Forest Park is quiet in the evening and the Marjan sea kayak finishes with wine at sunset. Getting a car out there on demand is not guaranteed, so agree a return before you set off.
  • Reef shoes or old trainers beat flip-flops. You launch and land off pebble beaches and the cliff jumping and snorkel stops involve climbing on rock. The ground where you get into the kayak is loose stone, which guests mention repeatedly as the moment they wished they had proper shoes.
  • Take mosquito repellent on the river trips. The Stobreč tours paddle from open sea into the Žrnovnica river mouth, and the still water near the reeds is where the mosquitoes are. This appears in guest advice and on none of the listings.
  • Choose a double over a single if there is any chop. Only the daytime adventure tour offers singles. Experienced paddlers manage them fine, but on a windy day a double tracks better through waves and a beginner in a single will work noticeably harder.
  • Ask about the weather policy when you book. Evening departures do get cancelled for conditions, and at least one guest reported a cancellation on what felt to them like a calm night. Free cancellation protects your money, not your only free evening, so book earlier in your trip rather than on the last night.
  • Sunscreen before you leave, not on the beach. Your hands will be wet from the first minute and applying it at the launch point is awkward. The backs of your legs and the tops of your feet catch the most sun on a sit-on-top.

How We Selected These Tours

Our team compared every kayaking trip bookable from Split on rating, review volume, and the two things the listings make hardest to see: where the boat actually launches, and whether getting there is included. On a page where three tours share one beach and two do not, that matters more than price. We kept five that span the real choice: the most-reviewed trip by a wide margin, the only one on open sea beneath Marjan, a sunset and a daytime version of the same sheltered route, and the self-guided river rental that costs half as much and lasts twice as long. Prices, ratings and review counts come from the live listings. Durations, group caps, ages, meeting points and inclusions were cross-checked against operator sites and independent booking mirrors rather than one source. Where sources disagreed, and they did on minimum age, we used the operator's own published figure and have said plainly that 12 is a recommendation rather than an enforced limit. We have not paddled all five, so where we describe the routes and the launch points we are drawing on published itineraries and guest reviews rather than implying otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a kayak tour in Split?+

Between €24 and €50 per person. The €24 option is a self-guided rental on the Cetina river at Omiš with no guide and no transfer. Guided trips from Stobreč run €40 to €48 and include the return van from central Split, and the Marjan sea kayak is €50 without transfer.

Where do kayak tours in Split actually go?+

Three different places, which the listings rarely make clear. Most Split-branded tours launch at Stobreč, about 5 km east, and paddle the Žrnovnica river mouth and the sea. One launches at Bene beach and follows the Marjan cliffs. One is a river rental on the Cetina at Omiš, 25 km down the coast.

Do you need experience to kayak in Split?+

No. Every guided trip here starts with a safety briefing and a basic paddling lesson, and the kayaks are stable sit-on-top designs rather than enclosed sea kayaks. Life vests are provided. What does matter is being comfortable in water, since swimming, snorkelling or a swim stop features on all of them.

What is the transparent kayak glow tour in Split?+

An evening trip from Stobreč in clear-hulled kayaks fitted with LED lights underneath, which make the riverbed and seabed visible after dark. It runs about 2.5 hours including the van transfer from Split, covers roughly 4 km on the Žrnovnica river and the Adriatic, and includes a night swim at a pebble beach.

What is the minimum age for kayaking in Split?+

It varies more than most people expect. The three Adriatic Adventure trips from Stobreč recommend 12 and over, the Marjan sea kayaking tour is not suitable for children under 8, and the Cetina rental has no hard minimum provided a child is accompanied by an adult. Check this before comparing prices.

Can you rent a kayak in Split instead of joining a tour?+

Yes, though the main rental is not in Split itself. The Cetina Protected Nature Park rental at Omiš gives you four hours with a kayak, paddle, life jacket and waterproof barrel for €24, after a safety briefing on site. You paddle 7 km upriver to Radmanove Mlinice and back at your own pace, unguided.

Is the sunset or the night kayak tour better in Split?+

They suit different people. The sunset tour gives you the best light on the cliffs and coastline and costs €42. The illuminated evening tour starts in that light then continues after dark with the LED kayaks, costs €48, and caps groups at 15 rather than 20. If you want photographs of scenery, take the sunset; if you want the novelty, take the glow tour.

Do Split kayak tours include transport?+

Three of the five do. The Stobreč trips all include a return van transfer from a meeting point near Bačvice, about 20 minutes each way. The Marjan sea kayaking tour does not, so you need a taxi to Bene beach in Marjan Forest Park. The Cetina rental has no transfer as standard, though the operator will quote for a pickup.
